The Spring Collection

I’ve been looking forward to this season for a long time. In the past month, I have experienced some major highs: getting married (we held a private ceremony) and moving in with the love of my life — and lows: cancelling long-anticipated trips, postponing our big wedding, and losing my job. The highs definitely outweigh the lows, and I’ve decided that the silver lining in all of this is having the opportunity to reinvigorate my spirit. It’s an added bonus that this is all happening in the Spring.

I find I am happiest when I am taking care of myself & living each day with intention. Having more time at home than ever before, I’ve been able to paint when the mood strikes, rather than being limited to evenings & weekends. The longer days allow me even more time with sunshine streaming into my studio, inspiring me to paint. This body of work is light, bright, and has a buoyant energy about it.

All of these paintings are on raw linen, my favorite substrate to work on. After stretching & stapling the linen over wooden bars, I paint a coat of clear gesso over the linen. This stiffens the fabric while allowing the texture and color of the linen to show through.

I’m constantly looking to my moodboard for inspiration on color combos, composition, and even pattern. I am always saving things that could inform a creative project down the road — a tip enforced by Megan Gonzalez, a creative director & founder of Mae Mae & Co, who I admire so much. Her reasoning is if you collect things that inspire you and spark ideas as you come across them, you will already have a collection to reference when you’re in need. Give her a follow on Instagram if you love color & design!

I use old catalogs as paint palettes - Restoration Hardware has the best ones because they are oversized and extra thick! I just peel out the top pages once dried and keep mixing colors on the remaining pages.

I also love using sample sizes of paint from The Home Depot. At around $3 a pop, it (sorta) balances out the high cost of the linen I use! Mixing these with acrylic paints from the art store is one of my favorite parts of my process. I get so much satisfaction from custom mixing a color that I see in my head or in some element of my moodboard!
